Thomas Oliver Croen Violinmaker

Luthier Tools

"Tom Croen is one of the most inventive violin makers around. He is marketing the
neatest purfling gizmos the violin making community has seen to date. It attaches
to and becomes one with a standard Foredom™ flexible shaft power tool and hand
piece and is used with precision carbide bits to excavate the purfling channel quickly
and accurately.  This tool not only saves time but saves wear and tear on your body."

                                                        - David Van Zandt, Violinmaker

This tool is designed to help cut the purfling channel fast and clean while achieving professional results. It will save you hours on the first use for a violin, and days on a cello. And it will reduce the strain on your hands, elbows and shoulders.

The tool is held like a traditional purfling scribe rather than being mounted in a heavy stationary device. Once you have selected the appropriate cutter size for your purfling, the adjustable guides allow you to accurately set the channel depth and distance from the edge. With a little practice the tool feels like it's floating effortlessly as it cuts a clean channel.

DESCRIPTION:

The body of the tool is constructed of solid milled brass, is comfortable in your hand and it's weight (4.5oz.) resists vibration during use. My purfling tool is designed to be used with a Foredom® Flex Shaft Motor, and to fit on a standard Foredom® handpiece. The cutting speed is controlled with a foot pedal, leaving your hands free to guide the tool.

The rounded guide-fence on the tool allows for right or left handed use and is adjustable to 9 mm from center of bit to the fence. The two upper extensions of the fence glide on the upper edge of the violin, giving absolute depth control.

PRICE:

$ 175.00. Instructions accompany the tool.

END MILLS:

Carbide micro-end mills are essential for cutting a clean channel. It is advisable to purchase the end mills in pairs. You won't want to be caught without a back up.  I stock the following sizes :

  • 1.0mm    .040"                $26 /pair
  • 1.1mm    .043"                $26 /pair
  • 1.2mm    .047"                $26 /pair
  • 1.3mm    .051"                $26 /pair
  • 1.4mm    .055"                $26 /pair
  • 1.5mm    .059"                $26 /pair
  • 1.59mm  .062" (1/16")      $30 /pair
  • 1.97mm  .078" (5/64")      $30 /pair
  • 2.39mm  .094" (3/32")      $30 /pair
  • 2.77mm  .109" (7/64")      $30 /pair
  • 1/8" ball end mill for setting the depth of the recurve after the purfling
is in (no spare necessary). $16 each

I recommend using end mills that are 0.1mm smaller than your purfling.

The preferred motor is the Foredom® M.SR-SCT 1/6 hp series SR hanging motor with the metal foot pedal. $210.00

Models H.30 and H.44T Foredom® handpieces have the necessary 1" diameter needed to mount the purfling tool. The H.44T uses collets and comes with a 1/8" collet needed for these micro mill ends. $50.00

The H.30 uses a chuck to hold the bits.  $55.00

The MAMH-5 hanger holds the motor and clamps to the bench. $35.00. Other styles are available.

The MAHR-2 Handpiece rest can hold 2 handpieces and clamps onto the MAMH-5 Hanger Pole. $7.00.

There is an additional shipping cost for all items.
